In a recent nationwide study conducted by Fateh Education, a prominent study abroad consultancy specializing in the UK and Ireland market, over 300 Indian students currently studying overseas participated. The findings underscore that university rankings remain the foremost consideration for Indian students pursuing international education. The study reveals a strong preference for institutions with prestigious rankings, indicating the paramount importance placed on academic reputation. The survey also highlights factors such as tuition fees, job opportunities, cost of living, scholarships, and post-study work visas as significant considerations for students when selecting a university.
Key Findings: University Rankings Take Center Stage
The study sheds light on the central role that university rankings play in guiding Indian students’ choices when studying abroad. With a clear inclination toward institutions with high rankings, the results suggest a limited familiarity among Indian students with the local education systems of their preferred countries.
    Additional Influencing Factors: Beyond Rankings
While university rankings were pivotal, the study identifies other crucial factors affecting students’ decisions. Tuition fees emerged as the second most important parameter, followed by job opportunities, reflecting the price-sensitive nature of the Indian market. Considerations such as cost of living, post-study work visa availability, course rankings, university location, and part-time work opportunities also played key roles in shaping students’ decisions.
Insights from Fateh Education CEO: Navigating Changing Trends
Commenting on the survey’s findings, Suneet Singh Kochar, CEO and Co-Founder of Fateh Education, emphasized the enduring importance of academic excellence for Indian students pursuing education abroad. Kochar stressed the need for comprehensive support mechanisms by counsellors, aligning students’ personal strengths and professional aspirations with global market trends.
Implications for Universities and Future Strategies
The study recommends that universities looking to attract Indian students should prioritize enhancing their academic reputation, as it emerges as a decisive factor in students’ choices. Those making efforts to improve global rankings stand to gain a competitive advantage in attracting top-quality students from India.
