For the upcoming summer and fall quarters, several departments at UW are offering study abroad programs that are open to students from all majors. Applications are now open for the spring, summer, and fall, with deadlines from Jan. 31 through Feb. 15. Designed to provide broad academic and professional experience within an international setting, the programs run in multiple cities across the globe to help students build identities abroad.

The study abroad programs that UW offers have many educational opportunities, including internships and exchanges, faculty-led programs, and direct enrollment options. In addition, students are exposed to local cultures through student housing, either on campus or within the city, and team excursions that take students on tours to engage with locals and attend campus events.

One of the programs offered is the Korea University (KU) exchange program. This program is worth up to 25 credits, with courses in liberal arts, sciences, and business administration. The program is run during spring and fall quarters, as well as yearlong, and takes place in Seoul.

Students at KU engage in department facilitated projects while exploring multiple areas of research and the university campus. The application for the KU Exchange program is open, and the deadline to apply for the autumn and yearlong options is Jan. 31.

“It helps tremendously to be on-site and experience the culture firsthand,” BaoTran Ho, an Asian languages and cultures and Korean double major who participated in the Korean intensive summer language program in 2023, said. “I was surrounded by native speakers 24/7; everything was authentic.”

The UW Rome in Residence program takes students through the streets of Rome and introduces them to the city’s famous architecture and history. Offered to students from all majors, the program facilitates a series of courses which are taught at the UW Rome Center. Students are expected to take a 15-credit quarter, with classes covering the history of Rome, communication, and intensive writing.

Applications for the fall 2024 Rome in Residence program are open, and the deadline to apply is Feb. 15. Pre-majors are also eligible, and decisions will be sent two weeks after the application deadline.

For more information about the types of programs available and applications, visit the UW study abroad portal or schedule an appointment with a program advisor.
