Hanadi Hariri, a Delta State University junior pre-nursing major with a minor in psychology, has received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study in London, Paris, Berlin, and Prague this summer. The competitive scholarship program provides up to $5,000 to college students to study or intern abroad.

As a Gilman Scholar, Hariri will participate in the Catalyst program, taking the courses “Psychology and Social Identity in Modern Europe” and “Mindfulness, Health Care, and Mental Wellness Counseling in Europe Today.”

“I feel really honored to have received a Gilman Scholarship. It is the support I needed to go study abroad. The thing I am looking forward to the most is seeing different cultures and different people,” Hariri said. “My future career is nursing. Studying abroad will help prepare me to interact with patients from different cultures.”

A member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and Delta State Student Nursing Association, Hariri has received several academic scholarships this year. She was recognized with the Brunetti Memorial Scholarship, Feduccia Scholarship, and the Robert E. Smith Endowed Nursing Scholarship by the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing. To assist her study abroad journey, she received a DSU Goes Global Passport Grant, which enables DSU students to receive their first U.S. passport.

Michelle Johansen, assistant coordinator of International Student Services and campus Gilman Scholarship adviser, noted that Hariri is Delta State’s first Gilman Scholar. “Hanadi has been working diligently with her academic advisers and the office of financial aid to apply for the Gilman Scholarship and make her dream of studying abroad a reality. Studying or interning abroad can be a life-changing experience for students, and our office’s goal is for more eligible students to apply for the Gilman Scholarship in the fall.”

All Gilman Scholars are required to be Pell Grant recipients. In addition to demonstrating academic achievement and extracurricular leadership, Gilman applicants must write a statement of purpose, an essay about building mutual understanding and meaningful relationships during their time abroad, and a follow-on service project proposal.

Supported by the U.S. Congress, the Gilman Scholarship is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and is aided in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
