A group of Slippery Rock University students toured the LinkedIn headquarters in Ireland and met with SRU alumnus Nicole Yale, ’10.

    June 20, 2024

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — There is a great big world outside of Slippery Rock University, one that SRU offers students the ability to see. With more than 36 programs and destinations available to visit, opportunities abound for students to travel abroad.

“All of these opportunities provide our students a chance to explore the world and understand and appreciate different countries and their cultures,” said Jenny Kawata, SRU director of global exchanges and partnerships. “Through these experiences, students also develop a deeper sense of themselves and relating to others through the lens of another culture.”

Last month, approximately 138 SRU students and 14 faculty and staff members traveled abroad to countries like Japan, Italy and Ireland.

Among the 20 students on a trip to Ireland was Leah Riegling, a sophomore strategic communication and media major from Cawston, British Columbia, Canada.

The trip led by Patrick Beswick, the interim director of student engagement and leadership, and Aubrey Rader, the assistant director of student organizations and leadership, explored leadership skills and approaches from the lens of Irish culture. The group also met with Nicole Yale, a 2010 SRU alumnus now working at LinkedIn’s Ireland headquarters. Yale, alongside other LinkedIn staff members, presented information about the company and offered a resume-building workshop for students during their visit.

This wasn’t the only thing students did. From sightseeing to cuisine-tasting, the group had many memorable moments during their weeklong stay in Dublin.

“Ireland is such a beautiful country,” said Riegling. “I got to explore beautiful hiking trails, walk around the city of Dublin and make friends for life. To anyone thinking of traveling abroad, I would definitely suggest it; you’ll have a trip of a lifetime.”

Programs are organized through the SRU Office of Global Engagement and can be searched by visiting abroad.sru.edu. Once a student identifies a desired program, they are asked to contact the professor and register for the trip by the specified deadline. Some programs have limits, including those exclusively for campus music groups or classes with prerequisites.

More information about study abroad opportunities at SRU is available on the the Office of Global Engagement webpage or by calling 724.738.2057.
