Many college students choose to spend their school breaks resting or visiting family and friends. But did you know that you can study abroad during winter break? January Term programs — also known as J-Term, winter session, intersession or winter term programs —are a great way to see the world, learn about a new culture, and dip your toes into the study abroad experience.

Here are 5 reasons to study abroad during winter break:

#1: Get a taste of life abroad.

One of the best things about studying abroad during winter break? You can get a taste of the study abroad experience without being away from home for too long. Since you’ll be away from home for a shorter period, you’ll be less likely to miss your family and friends too much. You’ll get the chance to see if traveling is for you and meet new people in the process.

The best part? If you decide to go abroad again with AIFS, you may be eligible for a grant for returning participants.

    #2: It’s cost-effective.

Worried about affordability? Studying abroad during winter break is a great budget-friendly choice. Since January Term programs are shorter, they generally cost less than semester-long programs. You may also be eligible for grants or scholarships to study abroad during winter break. Be sure to check with your study abroad office to see if you qualify for any other financial aid.

#3: You won’t miss any time on campus.

Not ready to commit to being overseas for an entire semester? Spend your winter break studying abroad instead. When you choose a January Term program, you won’t miss any sports, activities, social events or courses at your home campus. You’ll be back in time to start your Spring semester with your friends!

    #4: Avoid peak tourist season.

If you’re worried about traveling during the busy tourist season, study abroad during winter break instead. January Term programs take place in late December or January, so you’ll avoid the crowds and long lines at major sightseeing attractions. Plus, AIFS Abroad programs include a range of excursions and cultural activities to help you pack the most adventure possible into your winter break.

#5: Stay productive over the break.

While it’s tempting to spend your winter break catching up on sleep and watching Netflix, it’s one of the best times of the year to get ahead at school. Whether you are taking a course you need for your major or a fun elective, studying abroad during winter break is a fantastic way to earn credits towards your degree – and get one step closer to graduation.

So, if you’re looking for an adventure this winter break, consider a study abroad program.

With program options spanning over a dozen countries, AIFS is sure to have a January Term program that’s perfect for you.
