Spend your summer studying Spanish language and environmental science in Costa Rica, one of the most sustainable countries in the world! Home to rainforests, hot springs, volcanoes, beaches and fascinating wildlife, Costa Rica is an ideal destination for students looking to study environmental science and sustainability abroad.

Despite having a land area of just 19,700 square miles (smaller than the state of West Virginia!), Costa Rica is home to 5% of the Earth’s biodiversity. Plus, Costa Rica takes sustainable policies seriously – they are committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Social & Environmental Study Abroad Options in Costa Rica: Summer 2022

Earn up to 8 semester credits taking courses at Veritas University in San José, Costa Rica’s capital city. The university’s urban campus is just a short drive from lush rainforests, volcanoes, endearing sloths and stunning coastlines.

The best part? AIFS makes it easy to explore Costa Rica’s natural beauty and biodiversity. Program fees include a 3-day trip to Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can experience Costa Rica’s tropical wildlife and incredible beaches.

Students in the Spanish Language, Liberal Arts, Healthcare and Environmental Sciences Program take a Spanish language plus choose an elective course in liberal arts, healthcare or environmental sciences. Many elective courses explore global issues like sustainable development, climate change and conflict resolution and healthcare. A Spanish Language and Latin American Culture Program is also offered during the summer.

Social & Environmental Science Course Highlights for Study Abroad Students:

Many courses offered in Costa Rica explore social and environmental issues through a global lens. Here are a few of our exciting course options for Summer 2022:

    • Environmental Impact and Social Development
    • Climate Change: Impacts and Adaptations
    • Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems
    • Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Development
    • Conflict Resolution and Healthcare
    • Costa Rican Environmental Policy: A History of Policy, Politics and Action

What is it like studying social and environmental issues abroad in Costa Rica?

“As an Environmental Science and Policy Major, one of the reasons I chose Costa Rica was because of its rich and breathtaking landscapes. I came with hopes of immersing myself in the Latin American culture while simultaneously learning about the environmental regulations and protection agencies that work to preserve its unique environment.” – Andrea C., AIFS in Costa Rica alum

“I have swam in hot springs, visited volcanoes, played on the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to, and seen sloths, spiders, monkeys, and so much more of the wildlife here in Costa Rica.” –Katya A., AIFS in Costa Rica alum

“I’m more conscious of the trash I generate, including food waste… Plus, within my room I’ve noticed the amount of electric waste I initiate. In Costa Rica, electricity bills are higher to encourage a lower usage. Here, it is courteous to unplug your devices and turn off your lights ALWAYS before leaving your room.” –Emma P., AIFS in Costa Rica alum
