    On Dec. 4, the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council will begin accepting applications for its 2024 Freeman Foundation Study Abroad Tour to Japan.

    This is the 20th year that the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council, a Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit dedicated to youth leadership development and fostering global mindsets, has provided this opportunity.

    The organization has awarded $1.4 million in scholarships for 70 study tours to Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, New Zealand and Tahiti. The trips foster friendship building,
    provide enriching cultural activities, and emphasize hands-on learning.

    The Pacific & Asian Affairs Council will choose up to 20 students to participate and encourages seasoned and first-time international travelers to apply. In past years, support from the Freeman Foundation has allowed the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council to award merit scholarships to most participants who demonstrate financial need and/or commitment to its programs.

    Eligibility:

    • Hawaiʻi high school students in grades 9-12
    • Preference to students who have demonstrated commitment to Pacific & Asian Affairs Council programs, including its clubs and After-School Global Studies Classes

    Important Dates (tentative):

    • Applications Open: December 4, 2023
    • Applications Close: January 31, 2024
    • Selection Interviews: February 2024
    • Pre-Trip Orientation on O‘ahu: Early June 2024
    • Travel to Japan: June 2024

    The Pacific & Asian Affairs Council serves approximately 2,000 high school students annually through its programs, including after-school clubs and classes, international travel, conferences and more. Pacific & Asian Affairs Council programs are in high schools statewide and are open to all public, private, charter, and home school students.
