Unlikely Love Blossoms Between Two Cultures: A Study Abroad Success Story

From Guanajuato to Ashland: Fernanda’s Journey

Fernanda “Fer” Mejia Arroyo, a proud native of Guanajuato, Mexico, found herself in the quaint town of Ashland, Oregon in pursuit of a master’s degree at Southern Oregon University (SOU). The warm embrace of the Ashland community made her feel right at home. Little did she know that her decision to study abroad would lead to an unexpected romance with a local, Andy Evins.

The Sister-City Bond: Ashland and Guanajuato

The story of Fer and Andy is just one of many that have blossomed from the sister-city and university relationships between Ashland and Guanajuato, which began in 1969. These bonds have led to a rich cultural exchange, fostering education and personal growth. In fact, the program has sparked dozens of relationships and approximately 30 marriages, proving that love knows no borders.

The Transformative Power of Studying Abroad

Studies have shown that studying abroad significantly expands a person’s understanding of various cultures, languages, and traditions. Exchange programs build self-confidence and leadership skills, enabling students to thrive in diverse environments. More than 1,000 students, faculty members, and others have participated in the Ashland program, with some families being involved for three generations.

The love story of Fer and Andy serves as a testament to the power of International Academic Programs. Their tale highlights the life-changing opportunities that studying abroad can bring. So, if you’re considering expanding your horizons and exploring new cultures, don’t hesitate to meet with an International Program Coordinator and learn about the diverse portfolio of programs available.

Who knows? Your story might be the next beautiful chapter written in the annals of international education.

This Valentine’s Day, let the love story of Fer and Andy inspire you to take the leap and embark on your own study abroad adventure.
