Are you thinking about studying or interning abroad during your college years, but you’re not quite convinced yet? Here’s the thing – there’s no better time to go abroad. From incredible cultural experiences and new friendships to the personal growth and independence you’ll gain, going abroad is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that can change your life in more ways than you can imagine.

Here’s why it’s absolutely worth it to go abroad while you’re in college:

    1. You’ll have a community abroad…

Going abroad is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and form lasting friendships. Don’t worry if you’re going abroad without knowing anyone beforehand. Most likely, everyone on your program is pretty much in the same boat. By experiencing new adventures and challenges together, you’re bound to form strong bonds. Since you’ll be surrounded by other students who are also interested in exploring your new temporary home, you’ll have a built-in community to share your experiences with.

    2. …and you can earn credits towards graduation.

You can earn academic credit while abroad. Courses are available in a massive range of subjects so you can choose a class relating to your major or take a fascinating elective. Interested in an internship? Interns also have the option to earn academic credit during their program abroad. And here’s another bonus: if you’re a college student receiving financial aid, you might be able to apply it towards your program. We recommend checking with your home university’s financial aid office.

    3. It’s way easier.

When you go abroad with a high-quality provider like AIFS Abroad, you can rest easy. Our programs are super comprehensive and include things like housing, on-site support, 24/7 emergency support and cultural activities. Plus, an optional flight package is also available for many of our programs.

    4. You’ll learn in new ways…

Experiencing different teaching methods and academic cultures can give you a fresh perspective on your education. You’ll have the chance to learn from professors who might have a different approach to teaching, and you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the subject you’re studying within a global context. And let’s be honest – it’s way better seeing historic sites like the Colosseum in person versus in a textbook.

Going abroad in college is also amazing if you’re interested in learning another language. Whether you’re already at an advanced level or just starting out on your journey, it’s a great opportunity to practice and apply your language learning.

    5. …and learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

Going abroad is a chance to learn more about yourself and what you want in your life. What better time to find out than while you’re in college? Studying or interning abroad allows you to really explore your identity and gain a new perspective on your own culture.

If you choose an international internship program, you can test-drive a career path and develop global communication skills. No matter what program type you choose, you’re going to boost your soft skills that are vital in a professional environment, like flexibility and time management.

Plus, your international experience helps your resume stand out to employers. Studying abroad shows that you are adaptable and independent. Your experience will set you apart from other candidates and may open doors in your career. Who knows what adventures and opportunities await you?

Really – how often do you hear someone say they regret going abroad in their college years?

*Crickets* Yeah, not super common. For most people, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Think about it: how many times in your life will you have the chance to live in a new country, learn a new language and immerse yourself in a new culture like this?

Of course, going abroad isn’t always easy. There will be times when you feel homesick, frustrated or overwhelmed. But these challenges can also be opportunities for tremendous growth and learning. And by pushing through and adapting to new situations, you’ll develop self-confidence that will serve you well in all areas of your life.
