For two weeks each Spring, the charming seaside city of Cannes, France transforms itself into a hub for one of the film industry’s most important and iconic events: The Cannes Film Festival. If you’re a college student passionate about or pursuing film, we’re certain you’re well-versed in all that happens at Cannes — but did you know you can actually volunteer or intern at the Cannes Film Festival?

It’s true! Here at AIFS Abroad, we offer a spectacular Study + Internship program, where you take classes alongside participating in a part-time internship overseas.

Here’s everything you need to know about how you can volunteer or intern at the annual Cannes Film Festival in France.

The Cultural Impact of the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival, officially known as the Festival de Cannes, is one of the most prestigious and publicized film festivals in the world. Held annually in May in the glamorous city of Cannes on the French Riviera, this event attracts top talent from the global film industry. For two weeks, the sunny city transforms into a lively hub of cinema, culture, and glamour. Filmmakers, actors, producers, and journalists converge to celebrate the art and craft of filmmaking, premiere new films, and compete for the coveted Palme d’Or award.

Since its inception in 1946, the Cannes Film Festival has become a significant cultural event, setting trends in the film industry and beyond. It serves as a launching pad for new films, directors, and actors, often propelling them to international fame. The festival’s influence extends beyond cinema, impacting fashion, tourism, and the arts. It’s a melting pot of creativity and innovation, where ideas are exchanged, and collaborations are born.

    Experiencing Cannes During the Festival

During the festival, Cannes is a city transformed unlike any other. The usually serene town starts bustling with energy as red carpet events, glamorous parties, and film screenings take over. Filled with the excitement of premieres and the allure of celebrity sightings, the atmosphere is electric. For students abroad, this is a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment that is both professionally enriching and culturally vibrant.

Our Study + Internship program offers an exceptional chance for students to be part of the Cannes Film Festival. You can get involved in the festival in the many ways listed below.

    Cannes Cinéphile Pass

Students enrolled in the Cannes Film Festival Study + Internship Program receive a ‘Cannes Cinéphile’ pass. This pass allows you to watch all the films presented at the festival across various theaters in the city. It’s an amazing opportunity to see a wide range of films, from major blockbusters to independent gems.

    Volunteer Opportunities

Students may volunteer to work at the exclusive dinner gala organized by amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research). This prestigious event is attended by many Hollywood celebrities and notable figures from the worlds of fashion, music, and business. Volunteering at this gala offers a rare chance to witness the intersection of philanthropy and glamour. Plus, if you’re lucky, you may even get to walk the famous red carpet.

Other exciting volunteer opportunities at the Cannes Film Festival can be available to students.

“As a student with AIFS Abroad in Cannes, I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer for La Semaine de la Critique (International Critics’ Week), a portion of the Cannes Film Festival where people can come to watch and enjoy films of all types. This was also an incredible chance to put my french speaking abilities to the test! My time working for the festival was an experience I will never forget! I worked with so many people from all over Europe and created so many friendships. Not only did I get to enjoy the Cannes Film Festival itself, but being an actual part of its production was more than I could have ever imagined.”

Past internship placements have included a U.S. production company, an international film sales company providing administrative, office management, and marketing support, and hosting a film screening.

These internships provide invaluable hands-on experience in the film industry, making it an impactful opportunity for those pursuing careers in communications, public relations, or the arts.

Why Choose the Cannes Film Festival Study + Internship Program?

Participating in our Cannes Film Festival Study + Internship Program not only enhances your resume but also offers a unique cultural immersion. The chance to work at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, network with industry professionals, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of Cannes during the festival is truly unparalleled. Whether you’re volunteering at high-profile events or interning with influential companies, this program provides experiences that are both professionally rewarding and personally unforgettable.

“The festival was a whirlwind. It came. And it went. Just like this semester. It just reaffirmed to me that I am bound for nowhere else but that industry where the thrill is high, the work is rewarding, and where opportunities are boundless.”

    – Elise, AIFS Abroad in Cannes, France alum

If you’ve ever dreamed of being part of the Cannes Film Festival, this is your chance. Embrace the opportunity to volunteer or intern at the Cannes Film Festival and make the most of this exceptional experience with AIFS Abroad.

Here at AIFS Abroad, we know a thing or two about helping college students and pre-professionals study and intern abroad.
