24 students to receive full scholarship, study-abroad funding

EL PASO, TX (May 2, 2024) – Twenty-four high school seniors will receive full-ride scholarships to attend The University of Texas at El Paso, as well as $5,000 to fund a study-abroad experience, thanks to the Terry Foundation. The cohort includes the first-ever awardees from Fort Hancock, Texas.

Twenty-four high school seniors will receive full-ride scholarships to attend The University of Texas at El Paso, as well as $5,000 to fund a study-abroad experience, thanks to the Terry Foundation. The cohort includes the first-ever awardees from Fort Hancock, Texas.

“We’re so proud to welcome our newest class of Terry Scholars,” said Catie Mc Corry-Andalis, vice president for student affairs. “The scholarship has been an incredible benefit to our students since we first began our partnership with the Terry Foundation. I’m sure our new scholars will see their lives changed by it. We appreciate the Foundation’s continued support of UTEP and commitment to providing access to higher education.”

Founded by Houston philanthropists Nancy and Howard Terry, the Terry Foundation offers full scholarships to students attending 11 public higher education institutions in Texas. The Foundation has partnered with UTEP since 2015. Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership in the community and financial need.

Miranda Garcia and Alessandra Jimenez Rivero are the first two students from Fort Hancock, Texas to receive the Terry Scholarship.

Garcia plans to study kinesiology at UTEP and become a physical therapist.

“It feels great to be awarded the Terry Scholarship because it will open doors for opportunities such as studying abroad and also networking within the community,” Garcia said. “I hope that I can motivate others to try for the scholarship. I want my peers to know that we are capable of doing anything we set our minds to.”

Jimenez Rivero will attend UTEP to study political science with a minor in psychology and plans to attend law school after graduation. Her sister is a past Terry Scholarship recipient.

“UTEP is a university that feels like home,” Jimenez Rivero said. “It will provide me an opportunity to learn more about myself as well as my heritage. Being awarded the Terry scholarship means a lot. When my sister got the Terry for UT Austin, it was such a relief to my parents. She was able to live and attend UT at no cost to us. This meant my little brother and I could have more opportunities here at home.”

In addition to the scholarship, Terry Scholars become part of a student organization that hosts professional development and service activities and offers the opportunity to connect with fellow scholars and alumni of the program.
