The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport has announced plans to award 302 scholarships to students for study abroad in 2024.

The Ministry said that it will select 3,800 candidates who are eligible to apply for the scholarship awards exam.

The Ministry plan announced that several countries are providing scholarships to Cambodian students through the Ministry of Education for next year, including China, which has offered 70 postgraduate and 20 undergraduate scholarships.

Japan is offering 50 postgraduate, post-secondary and vocational technical scholarships along with five research fellowships. Hungary is providing 30 postgraduate and higher education scholarships.

Cuba is awarding two undergraduate scholarships, while Vietnam is offering 100 undergraduate scholarships.

Laos is offering 15 undergraduate scholarships and Thailand is awarding 10 doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degree scholarships.

According to the Ministry of Education, the number of scholarships to study abroad in 2024 may change as the new year progresses.

The project to select scholarship students to study abroad was announced after the Ministry of Education announced the results of the high school diploma exam on November 23, with 98,460 students, or 72.89% of a total 135,084 candidates. Of these, 1,673 students got Grade A.

Spokeswman for the Ministry of Education Khuon Vicheka said that the number of scholarship students who will study abroad in 2024 is similar to previous years.

She said that this year the Ministry of Education awarded 672 scholarships to Cambodian students. The students are studying in China, Japan, Hungary, Cuba, Russia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.

She added that the subjects available for scholarship students to study abroad next year will be determined in due time after agreements are finalised through the embassies of participating countries.

“In the past, Cambodia has also awarded scholarships to students from ASEAN countries such as Laos,” she said.

Vicheka noted that 192 Lao students received Cambodian government scholarships between 2000 and this year to study at various institutions of higher education in Cambodia. So far, 140 Laotian students have graduated from Cambodian colleges and universities and 59 Lao students are presently studying in Cambodia.

At a gathering of alumni of graduates who studied in France organised by the French Embassy in Cambodia in May, Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron said that over the past decade, Cambodia has sent more than 1,200 scholarship students to study in France.
