The BU Study Exchange Programme is a fantastic opportunity to experience a new country and culture during your BU degree.

If you are interested in studying abroad for a semester at one of our selected partner universities during the spring semester of your second year of undergraduate study, our second call for applications is now open. Read more about the programme and available funding below.

If you wish to study abroad during your placement year, final year or at Master’s level, arrangements can be made on a case-by-case basis. Speak to your Faculty’s Programme Leader or Global Engagement Lead/Study Abroad Academic Coordinator to discuss your options.

Opportunities at BU are available worldwide, at specially selected partner universities. The locations available are dependent on your course. You can find more information about the Study Exchange Programme, including the destinations available for your course on the study abroad webpage.

    How to apply

To apply to the Study Exchange Programme in semester two (spring) in 2024/2025 academic year, you will need to submit an application online.

Applications will be assessed on a first come, first served basis and will remain open until the 1 September 2024. Apply early for a better chance of being able to select a space at your preferred location.

As part of the application process, you’ll need to tell us why this experience will benefit you and why you’d be a great ambassador for BU. We will also need evidence of your current academic performance.

    Funding opportunities

The Turing Scheme at BU supports study and work overseas opportunities globally. BU has applied for Turing Scheme funding for the 2024/25 academic year to support international opportunities.  Subject to our bid being successful, study exchange students will be able to receive Turing Scheme funding as a contribution to the costs of living overseas.

Being part of the Study Exchange Programme does not affect your eligibility to receive funding via Student Finance.

Thinking about volunteering, work experience or a placement abroad?

Turing Scheme at BU funding is also available to support work experience, volunteering, or placement opportunities worldwide.

This is open to all BU students (from any programme or level) and can include a placement undertaken as part of a placement year, voluntary work-based learning, short-term study, or a placement undertaken shortly after graduating. Funding is available to support BU students with the costs associated with undertaking a placement overseas. You can find more information about the Turing Scheme at BU on our webpages.

    More information

Our drop-in sessions are every Monday (virtual/in-person) and Wednesday (in-person) afternoons during term time.

The sessions are open to all students wanting to find out about opportunities to study and work overseas during your degree and the funding available to support you.

    Looking to drop-in?

    • Mondays, 1pm – 5pm: Join us online via Microsoft Teams, search “BU Study and Work Overseas Drop-in”
    • Mondays, 1pm – 3pm: Visit us in person in the Careers Zone, Bournemouth Gateway Building, Lansdowne Campus
    • Wednesdays, 1pm – 5pm: Visit us in person at the Careers Zone, in The Hub, Poole House, Talbot Campus (next to the AskBU desk).

Alternatively, you can email the team.
