Seven students from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have accepted the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. The scholarship allows students to study or intern abroad in a variety of countries and world regions, equipping them with skills critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity.

“Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship go the extra mile to tell their unique story, and the strongest applications imagine how an international experience will shape careers and futures,” said Laura De Furio, associate director of undergraduate research and fellowships at UT. “In Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, we really enjoy getting to know all the Gilman applicants while we help them craft their personal narratives, and we are thrilled when they receive the funding that allows them to explore the world.”

Undergraduate Research and Fellowships supports students and alumni as they apply for a wide range of nationally competitive fellowships, including the Gilman. The office helps students develop competitive candidacies through advising, application essay writing workshops and interview preparation.

The program is named for Benjamin Gilman, who served from 1973 to 2003 in the U.S. House of Representatives and for many years on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

    Gilman awardees

    • Mariah Davis, a kinesiology major in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences
    • Jonathan Morrell, a communication studies major in the College of Communication and Information
    • Jack Reid, an economics major in the Haslam College of Business
    • Cole Roberts, a wildlife and fisheries sciences major with a concentration in wildlife and fisheries management in the Herbert College of Agriculture
    • Alexa Sharp, a plant sciences major with a concentration in sustainable landscape design in the Herbert College of Agriculture
    • Miracle Smith, a finance major with a concentration in business analytics in the Haslam College of Business
    • Angie Vega, a human resource management major with a concentration in international business in the Haslam College of Business

To explore fellowship opportunities or for support applying to nationally competitive awards like the Gilman scholarship, UT students can visit the Undergraduate Research and Fellowships website or contact the Programs Abroad office.
