Sachin Baid, hailing from a small town, Bongaigaon, in Assam, is a second-year student at Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. While pursuing a master’s in Management programme, specialising in the Global Strategy Track, he is also working in the Société Générale Frankfurt office, Finance Department. “If one’s passion lies in finance or investment banking, Frankfurt is undoubtedly a gem,” says Sachin, adding, “It’s a pulsating financial hub and immersing oneself here will provide one with incomparable exposure and opportunities in the financial world.”

Prior to joining Frankfurt School, Sachin pursued BCom and a master’s in Management at Gauhati University. “My decision to join Frankfurt School for a master’s in Management was more than an academic pursuit. It was an adventure that would shape my identity and future. It was not merely an academic decision but a step into a new world, filled with opportunities, growth, and transformation,” he says, adding, “The diverse students’ body and forward-thinking faculty turned Frankfurt School into a melting pot of ideas where innovation thrived.”

“The academic experiences paved the way for greater responsibilities. My role as a class representative has taught me the art of empathy and communication. I became the bridge between my classmates and management, ensuring every voice was heard,” says Sachin.

Before arriving in Germany, Sachin was quite apprehensive as he had heard that Germans might be unfriendly or cold. “The reality couldn’t be more different! I found a warm, welcoming atmosphere here where people respect and value cultural diversity. The support from the community has been incredible, and to my immense pride, I was elected to the students’ council at Frankfurt School,” he says.

“Adapting to the practical and hands-on style of education was a bit of a challenge initially since it was vastly different from what I was used to in India. However, with time, and the unwavering support from exceptional professors and academic staff at Frankfurt School, I found my footing,” says Sachin.

Reminiscing his time at Frankfurt School as a medley of academic brilliance, leadership, friendship, and personal growth, Sachin says, “It’s a journey I would recommend to anyone seeking to challenge themselves, to grow, and to become a part of something bigger.”

The Assam boy had also undertaken a summer internship which was a thrilling ride of growth and discovery. “At Deloitte Consulting, I stepped into the role of a technology strategy and transformation intern within the Financial Services – Banking Division. Transitioning from Deloitte to my current position at Société Générale in Frankfurt, I’ve embraced the role of a working student in the corporate and investment banking division,” he says.

The evolution from strategy consulting to a focus on compliance and accounting within the banking sector has been a valuable expansion of my skillset, equipping me with a versatile understanding of finance that bridges the gap between theory and practice, says Sachin.

    Embrace the challenges
For those looking to study in Germany, Sachin says, “Embrace the challenges you’ll face. Life abroad is not a cakewalk, but it’s through these challenges that you’ll find yourself growing and evolving. Don’t be disheartened by obstacles or rejections, especially during job hunts. Resilience and perseverance are key, and maintaining a positive attitude will eventually open the right doors.”

An indispensable piece of advice from Sachin is to take German language seriously. “It is advisable to at least complete the basics before arriving in Germany, as initially one might find oneself swamped and may lose track,” he says. As an international student, Sachin says, “It’s imperative to be open and adaptive to the cultural diversity that Germany offers. This country is a mosaic of traditions and cultures, and respecting this diversity will not only enrich your own experience but will also help you build a robust network of relationships that could be invaluable in your personal and professional life.”
