Hear from four college students who did a study abroad program in the Czech Republic with AIFS Abroad!
Jasmine: Fall Semester in Prague
Jasmine, a junior from the University of New Hampshire, studied abroad in Prague during fall semester.
Hear Jasmine describe why she chose Prague:
“I was actually stuck between London and Prague when choosing to study abroad, but I chose to study abroad in Prague because I wanted to immerse myself in a new language and a new culture. And I just wanted to be in a beautiful city right in the middle of Europe, [where] it’s easy to get around and travel to different places. It’s a beautiful city with amazing views, and it feels like a movie being here.”
Jasmine also said that “When you’re in Prague, you’ll find that it’s actually easy and cheap to travel to neighboring countries and cities!” During her study abroad program, she went to “Bohemia Switzerland [National Park] in early October, which is on the border between Czechia and Germany! Narnia was filmed there!” Jasmine also went on some AIFS Abroad trips and excursions, including the Auschwitz-Krakow 3-day excursion and the two-day Moravia trip, where she says they “went to a cave, Brno, a palace, a wine cellar, and much more!”
Not only did Jasmine enjoy traveling in Europe and exploring Prague, but she also loved her classes abroad, as she explains:
“I love all my classes… I’m a sociology and justice studies major, so of course, the Sociology of Food class is one of my favorites overall because it’s applying things I already know to the topic of food, which is interesting to me.”
No matter where you go with AIFS Abroad, you can rest assured that there will be trusted on-site staff who are ready to support you, as they did with Jasmine in Prague:
“There is AIFS staff here in Prague. There’s an AIFS office right near the center of the city, and you can go there pretty much any time. Usually, one of the Program Directors is there, either Renata or Jenny, and they’re both amazing; you can call them anytime. [There is also] the AIFS emergency phone number, [and] we have an AIFS group chat for the semester, [which] you can text pretty much anytime and someone will respond. They’re amazing.”
Leah: Spring Semester in Prague
Leah, an English and non-profit management student from The Ohio State University, studied abroad in Prague during the spring semester.

It’s normal for study abroad students who don’t know anyone in their program to worry about making friends abroad. As Leah explains, making friends is easy on AIFS Abroad programs:
“I came to Prague not knowing anybody, and the first week I met a lot of people in AIFS through our welcome week programs—the programming is really extensive and great, and we had an early trip to Moravia… which was really nice, I got to bond with a lot of people…”
For students who want to study abroad on a budget, the Czech Republic may be a great option. As Leah said, the cost of living is much lower in Prague compared to New York, where she’s from:
“Things are generally really cheap in Prague, especially compared to New York prices. I’d say most things [in Prague] are around half the price of what I’d pay in New York, especially when you talk about food. Most dinners out will be like 10 bucks or less, and then you can add a 10% tip, but it’s not mandatory.”
Not only did Leah love how cheap the food was, but she also said that “Food in Prague is 10/10, but you’ve got to do your research.” She recommends following local food accounts on Instagram before you study abroad so you can find hidden gems and restaurants serving delicious Czech dishes.
Ava: Summer in Prague
Ava, an Anthropology student from the University of Arkansas, chose a summer study abroad program in Prague. Hear Ava describe her experience taking classes at Charles University:

“My Interpretation of European Fairytale class was super fun and allowed me to read stories and watch films I’ve never heard of before. We also got to go on some field trips to see where Czech legends originated from, which was super awesome! And my other class, Urban Perspectives, really opened my eyes to the reality of living in Prague—the good and the bad—that I definitely would not have learned in any other place. They were extremely unique to Charles University and Prague and were different from classes back home, but in the best way possible.”
Below, Ava explains her favorite part of studying abroad:
“Definitely just the experience of visiting another country, but not as a tourist, as a student. I think it really allows you to see the culture and the country in a different light that you wouldn’t normally get just as a tourist. I’ve gotten to know all the good spots—all the good café spots, all the good restaurants, the cheaper, more affordable, more local spots. You definitely wouldn’t be getting that just as a tourist here.”
Jasmine wasn’t the only one who raved about the helpful on-site support in Prague! Listen to what Ava had to say about her Program Director, Renata:
“We love Renata! She has helped coordinate the excursions & activities provided by AIFS, along with helping out with anything we need! Genuinely such an amazing lady!”
Hannah: Study + Internship in Prague
Hannah from Rhodes College did a Study + Internship program in Prague during her spring semester. This unique type of program allows college students to study and intern abroad at the same time, by taking classes alongside a part-time internship.
Hannah chose Prague because, as she explains, she wanted a unique study abroad experience:
“I chose to study abroad in Prague because I wanted to do something different than what most of my peers were doing. I did not know of many people [who] had studied in Prague… I realized that with Prague I would have the ability to truly experience everything that the city has to offer…”
Hear Hannah describe how she spent her free time in Prague:
“When I am not in classes or at my internship, I might be sitting in a cafe working on some homework, grocery shopping, going to explore a new area of Prague, going to a museum, or hanging out with friends. It really depends on the day. That’s part of what makes this experience so unique. I know that if I were at my home university, I would not have used an afternoon off from classes to go explore a museum or a new area. At home, I have a much tighter schedule, but now, if a colleague from my internship gives me a recommendation for a new restaurant or a place to visit, then I have enough time to go.”
Interested in what her internship role in Prague entailed? Hannah explains her internship in more detail below:
“During my internship, I have been working as an International Promotion Specialist with the Partner Relations team at a sports-related business. The Partner Relations team is a subset of the marketing department that manages brand partnerships. Through this internship and the company’s strategic brand partnerships, I have gained exposure to a whole new side of marketing. Additionally, I have witnessed the process of securing cross-cultural partnerships.”
