Many students in India after completing Class 12 aim to study abroad and then eventually get settled in the country. According to a report by the Ministry of External Affairs, over 1.3 million Indian students migrated for education purposes from 2017-2022. In terms of study destinations for Indian students, the USA ranks first followed by Canada, UAE, Australia, and Saudi Arabia.

Another popular country for educational purposes is Germany, which is emerging as a top destination for Indian students because of its minimal tuition fees and a 90 per cent success rate for student visas among other factors. In fact, the cost of education in Germany is low as higher education is mostly public-funded. Under such situations, students only have to take care of their living expenses, which German Embassy officials told The Indian Express was around 950 Euros (including rent, local transportation, food, and recreation).

Are you also thinking of moving to Germany for higher education? If yes then we are here to give you some tips you need to have to make the best choice.

    — As mentioned above about the less tuition fees, Germany’s educational institutes are good for foreign talent. However, it becomes a task to research about them, considering there are numerous universities accepting international students. So, it is important for students to know about colleges, courses, admission process, scholarship, future prospectus of the course in the country or in India.

    — Whether you want to apply for graduation or master degree or PhD, it is important for students to evaluate the demand and cost. With more than 17,000 courses available in the country, students should analyse what suits their needs and marketplace’s demand. There are a few universities which offer free self-evaluation which if put to use can help student assess their interest.

    Festive offer

    — India and Germany have different education system so it is important for candidates to have an overview of the subjects they want to study. There are various such non-profit websites and organiations that support the need but one of them is German Academic Exchange Service (DAES). The service offers a structured course overview of all types of degree like bachelor, master and PhD programmes.

    — Like India’s NIRF rankings, Germany too has a country ranking system called CHE University Ranking System. Through this ranking system you can know whether the college or university you want to apply for is apt for your course or not.

    short article insert
As reported by The Indian Express earlier, a record 43,000 Indian students are presently enrolled in various German colleges and universities, marking a 100 per cent increase over the last five years. Officials from the German Embassy in New Delhi said that they expect to see a further rise, with somewhere between 45,000-50,000 Indian students enrolled by the end of 2024.

In 2023, Germany became the third most popular country for international students and the first among non-English speaking countries. As many as 16,850 fresh visas were issued by Germany to Indian students in the year 2023.

With regards to what Indian students study in Germany, engineering programmes continue to be the most sought-after, accounting for 60% of all Indian students in Germany. But there is also a huge interest in streams such as law, management and social sciences (20%), and mathematics (15 %), the Embassy officials said.
