As fall quarter wraps up and winter break begins, many students start to ask: what now? Those weeks between quarters can feel like a weird limbo—plenty of downtime, but not much direction. It’s easy to fall into a cycle of scrolling, streaming, and losing momentum. But here’s something you might not know: you can spend that time studying abroad in a different country—without missing a beat academically.

Discover why winter quarter is becoming an increasingly popular time for students to gain international experience without falling behind academically.

    What is Winter Quarter?

Unlike traditional semester-long or multi-month summer programs, winter quarter sessions are shorter and more focused. This compact timeframe gives you the chance to dive into learning, travel, and cultural immersion — all without committing to a long stay or disrupting your academic progress.

Benefits of Studying Abroad during Winter Quarter

If your school is on the quarter system, winter quarter is a great time to break out of your routine and study abroad. It’s an option many students don’t think about, but it comes with real perks!

    • Stay on track academically
    • Spend less on travel and avoid the crowds
    • Won’t disrupt your schedule since it’s short-term
    • Gives you a change to get a head start on summer plans
    • Smaller groups to maximize connection with new friends

Top Places to Study Abroad this Winter Quarter

There are so many incredible places to study abroad during winter quarter, but we’re partial to one in particular: Salzburg, Austria.

Nestled in the Austrian Alps, Salzburg is a hidden gem for college students — it’s a stellar destination for living like a local and learning abroad. You’ll be able to learn about Austrian culture, explore the surrounding region and the rest of Europe, and immerse yourself in the German language while gaining independence and boosting your resume with your international experience.

During our winter quarter program in Salzburg, students take one intensive course in January, followed by three elective courses from February through March — all taught in English. Many classes include built-in field trips, and the program also offers a full schedule of cultural events and excursions, like a weekend in Vienna and a day trip to Innsbruck. With a thoughtfully planned curriculum, engaging activities, and support from experienced on-site AIFS Abroad staff, students get the most out of their winter quarter abroad — both in and out of the classroom.

Find your place in the world after fall quarter — consider a winter quarter study abroad program!

If you’re looking for an enriching adventure that fits seamlessly into your schedule, consider a winter quarter study abroad program. The world is waiting for you!
