Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship recipients (WVU Graphic)
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Eight West Virginia University students are getting ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime, and one scholarship is helping to ease their financial concerns.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is available to undergrads in “good standing at an accredited institution of higher education” and who are also recipients of the Pell Grant according to the scholarships website, allowing students who may be limited financially to study abroad.
The national award is funded by the U.S. State Department.
Those who applied were assisted by the ASPIRE Office, which helps students apply for competitive scholarships like this one. Assistant director Cate Johnson is looking forward to seeing what the awarded students learn.
“International travel is one of the most impactful learning experiences that an undergraduate student can engage in,” Johnson said in a press release. “It’s exciting to see so many WVU students taking advantage of Gilman Scholarship funding year after year.”
The newest recipients are:
- Chelsea Elliott for travel to Western Europe
- Shawna Hart for travel to the United Kingdom
- Kevin Harter for travel to New Zealand
- Chyanne Reid for travel to Ireland
