Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations for college students looking to study or intern abroad. With its Mediterranean climate, Modernist architecture and bustling business center, it isn’t hard to see why. Our team narrowed it down to the top six reasons why you should go to Barcelona at least once in your life.

Here are a few (of the many!) reasons why going to Barcelona belongs on your bucket list:

    The City

Barcelona is located in the southeastern region of Spain known as Catalonia. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, summertime in Barcelona is particularly excellent, whether you’re interested in soaking up the sun, swimming, or playing some beach volleyball.

    Food

One cannot leave Barcelona without trying some authentic paella, and no trip to Spain is complete without going out for tapas and drinks!

    Language and Culture

Maintaining its native language of Catalan has allowed Barcelona to stand apart from the rest of the nation. The majority of Barcelona’s residents are fully bilingual and speak both Catalan and Spanish.

    Sports

Like many European cities, Barcelona is home to passionate soccer fans. The city’s most popular team, FC Barcelona, is one of the most successful in recent history. Their stadium, Camp Nou, is also the biggest stadium in Europe, and there is nothing quite like hearing 100,000 fans cheering on Lionel Messi.

    Architecture

Barcelona boasts the legendary architect, Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi designed iconic buildings in the city, including La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, and Parc Guell. They are like nothing else you’ve ever seen. Photos just don’t do justice to these architectural marvels – you need to experience the beauty of these surreal buildings for yourself!

    Nightlife

Barcelona’s myriad of nightclubs, bars, and restaurants not only attract the native Catalans, but people from every corner of Europe.

    Did you know?

AIFS Abroad offers multiple study abroad and international internship programs in Barcelona. Don’t just be a tourist – live like a local and immerse yourself in everything this Catalan capital has to offer!
