Studying abroad as a Gilman Scholar helps students gain professional skills, build language proficiencies and develop knowledgeable perspectives of the world to help them succeed in their careers.

Seven University of Alabama at Birmingham students have been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and one student has received the Gilman-McCain Scholarship by the United States Department of State.

“These scholarships are life-changing opportunities, as they provide funding for international study and help enrich cultural and social experiences of students,” said Michelle Cook, Ph.D., director of UAB’s Office of National and International Fellowships and Scholarships. “Gaining national recognition in this way empowers these students toward even greater things in the future.”

This year’s recipients include all Honors College students representing the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, and the School of Engineering.

    • Einas Ali, a public health major from Hoover, Alabama, will travel to the United Arab Emirates.
    • Mariah Payne, a double major in English and communication studies from Semmes, Alabama, will travel to France.
    • Dayana Juarez, a nursing major from Pinson, Alabama, will travel to Wales, United Kingdom.
    • Tanner Caton, a double major in Spanish and neuroscience from Wetumpka, Alabama, will travel to Peru.
    • Alyson Goodwin, a biomedical engineering major from Hoover, Alabama, will travel to South Korea.
    • Ana Nunn, an immunology major from Helena, Alabama, will travel to Spain.
    • Devin Sherman, a Spanish major from Leeds, Alabama, will travel to Spain.
    • Alyssa Norton, a nursing major from Calera, Alabama, is the recipient of the Gilman-McCain Scholarship, and she will travel to Spain.

The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program aims to make study abroad experiences accessible to a more diverse population of students and allows students to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies — making them better prepared to assume leadership roles in government and the private sector.

UAB’s Office of National and International Fellowships and Scholarships works closely with the UAB Office of Education Abroad team to guide students through the scholarship process and help them manage the logistics of international travel.
