Summer Study Abroad Options in London: Social Issues & Sustainability

With nearly 40% of its population born outside the U.K., London is one of the most diverse cities in the world. Learn about the national, ethnic and religious diversity in London through the Diversity in London Program. Offered during Session 2, this summer study abroad program explores the experiences of minority ethnicities in London and the process of immigration. You’ll learn more about important topics like institutionalized racism and anti-racism movements in London, including Black Lives Matter U.K. In addition to classroom learning, you’ll engage with local Black and minority ethnic community and campaigning groups in London.

The Diversity in London Program also explores the city’s history of activism and grassroots movements through guided walking tours such as a Black History walk, where you’ll learn about topics including the founding of the British Black Panthers in 1968. Students also visit important places like Brick Lane – the heart of the city’s Bangladeshi community – as well as organizations working to tackle institutionalized racism in modern Britain.

Students in the Traditional Academic Program can also focus on social and sustainability issues. With a huge selection of courses to choose from in London, it’s easy to focus on the subjects that matter the most to you during your study abroad journey. There are several courses available that focus on a range of social and environmental issues, including human rights, gentrification issues, social care and mental health, sustainable urban development and immigration issues.
