When studying abroad, you’re there to learn both inside and outside of the classroom. That means making sure you’re enjoying all that your host country has to offer. If you’re planning on doing a study abroad program in Costa Rica during your summer break, you’ll especially need to respect pura vida. It roughly translates to “simple life” or “pure life,” but it’s so much more than just a saying. Ticos (Costa Ricans) use the term to say everything from “hello,” “goodbye,” and “everything’s great.” Perhaps it’s because of the pura vida mindset that makes Costa Rica one of the happiest countries in the world!

If you’re trying to get a taste of the pura vida lifestyle, here’s why you have to study abroad in Costa Rica in summer:

    Low Season

Due to it being a little rainier than usual (make sure you bring extra socks!), summer is considered the “low season” for Costa Rica, meaning there are less people and prices are likely to be more affordable. Also, in late July, much of the country experiences what locals call veranillo (“little summer”) where the sun comes out quite regularly. It’s the perfect time to hit the beach!

    Outdoor Adventures

Costa Rica is perhaps most well-known for its various outdoor activities, and summer is the best time to take advantage of the available adventures. If you’ve seen a friend or acquaintance post an Instagram photo of themselves on a zip-line, there’s a good chance it was taken in Costa Rica. There are many places to fly through the rainforest canopy along with the local howler monkeys, particularly in Braulio Carrillo National Park. There’s also hiking, horseback riding, and white-water rafting. For those who want a less extreme outdoor experience, there are river boat, volcano, and even coffee farm tours! And when it rains, it only makes the jungles greener and more filled with life.

    Indoor Adventures

Because it’s the rainy season, chances are you’re going to want to plan some indoor activities during your summer study abroad in Costa Rica. Catch a show at Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica in the central section of San José, or gaze at the shiny golden artifacts dated 300 to 400 BC at the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. Each treasure is a symbol of authority, and a testament to the era’s craftmanship.

    Critters Galore

Due to its tropical climate, Costa Rica is blessed with biodiverse network of flora and fauna, especially in Corcovado National Park, which is world-renowned amongst ecologists. Howlers and spider monkeys survey the jungle canopies, while jaguars and ocelots prowl the brush that tapirs feed on. Up above you can see a wide variety of colorful birds, including toucans, macaws and hummingbirds. Costa Rica takes pride in their amazing wildlife and is the first tropical country to have stopped and reversed deforestation!

    Wealth of Wellness

Costa Rica’s unique pura vida way of life lends itself to wellness and relaxation. You haven’t experienced yoga until you’ve done it surrounded by the country’s enveloping tropical natural beauty. Tree pose in the rainforest of Corcovado National Park, warrior pose while looking over the Arenal volcano, or child’s pose beneath the La Fortuna Waterfall. There are also many spas and wellness centers all over Costa Rica, so keep that in mind if you’re looking to relax before or after a big exam or project.

If you’re looking for a chill summer experience that also includes its fair share of thrills, join us and study abroad in San José, Costa Rica.

If you’re considering a summer study abroad program in Costa Rica, you’ve come to the right place. Here at AIFS Abroad, we offer incredible program options in the country’s capital, San José. With inclusions such as tuition, housing, insurance, excursions and activities, on-site staff, and emergency support, you’ll have a stress-free global education experience. Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in Costa Rican natural beauty and wildlife, while earning college credits in between spring and fall semester. Are you ready?
