Students have mixed reactions to college dropping higher-level CCCX courses – The Columbia Chronicle
Earlier this year, the college decreased the number of required Columbia Experience — or CCCX — courses from three to one. The change was announced in an email in early June long after fall registration had started and when many students had left for the summer. Returning juniors and seniors told the Chronicle they had mixed feelings about the decision. Some said they liked the change because it helped open up their schedules for different electives. Others were upset about the timing. Olivia Byam, a junior fashion design major, is glad the requirement changed. “Freshman year I liked having my Big Chicago…
This past year, I began a journey a year away from Notre Dame’s campus. During the fall semester, I am studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, and in the spring I am completing a semester in Washington D.C. through Notre Dame’s Washington Program. While I could write an entire blog on why I made the incredibly difficult decision to study away from Notre Dame for the year, I want to dedicate this blog to the five things I have come to miss most about campus in my time away. For current students, I hope this blog gives a greater appreciation for…
(‘My dear students’, a fortnightly column that is a conversation with young minds on current events, books, popular culture — just about anything that’s worth talking over a cup of coffee.)As some of you might know, applying to US universities is a litany of woes, the mainstay of which is the requirement that you write about yourself. The essay questions (or prompts as they are often called) are meant to provoke you into writing creatively but can have the opposite effect. An admissions essay is the surest way to a writer’s block for whenever someone tells you to write about…

Mumbai Congress chief and former Maharashtra minister Varsha Gaikwad has written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman requesting that the tax collected at source (TCS) on international money transfers be reduced for families sending money to children pursing education abroad as per The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) of the Reserve Bank of India. As per the current regulations, a 5% TCS is levied on international transactions exceeding Rs 7,00,000. Gaikwad has requested to reduce the TCS rate from existing 5% to 2% and an increase in the transaction limit to Rs 10,00,000. In her letter to Sitharaman, Gaikwad said that…
In June 2018, I first saw West Virginia University’s campus. I vividly remember seeing flags from all around the world hanging in the Mountainlair. Like many other people, I fell in love with it immediately, and I still loved it when I toured in 2019 and started in 2020. Coming from Weirton, West Virginia, Morgantown was a breath of fresh air. All around me were people to meet, places to experience and opportunities to jump at. I fear that when I graduate, this will no longer be the WVU that I once fell in love with.I am a first-generation student…
Under strict new measures introduced by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, foreign embassies may no longer issue documents to Belarusians. This will make it impossible for Belarusians outside of the country to renew passports unless they return — which could lead to criminal prosecution for some who fled after the 2020 protests. Russia, on the other hand, has adopted a different approach to encourage the return of its citizens abroad. After considering a 30% tax on emigrants’ income, they settled on a 13% personal income tax rate. There are even discussions about allowing Russians abroad to go to consulates to obtain…
