Studying engineering abroad is an excellent way to broaden one’s worldview and learn how to make a positive impact. Claire Fanning, a rising junior in biomedical engineering, is spending six weeks this summer in a study abroad program in Paris, France.

Fanning has expanded her engineering knowledge while embarking on thrilling adventures across Europe. She’s explored the streets of Paris, attended a grand ball in Vienna, Austria, and gone skydiving above the stunning landscapes of Switzerland.

    Claire Fanning abroad

Fanning says that studying abroad has been one of the best experiences she’s had while in college. Read on for a Q&A to learn more about the experience.

    Please introduce yourself.

My name is Claire Fanning, I am a biomedical engineering major on a pre-medicine and biomechanics track. I am also a member of both Kappa Alpha Theta and the Society of Women Engineers.

Why did you choose to study abroad?

One of my biggest dreams in life has always been to see as much of the world as I can. I felt that studying abroad gave me the perfect opportunity to see many different cities while also experiencing Paris similarly to how a local would.

What study abroad program are you participating in?

I am currently participating in a six-week summer course through CEA CAPA and am enrolled in Thermodynamics for the duration of my time in Paris.

How did Mizzou prepare you for this program?

Mizzou prepared me for this program by having a great program search tool where I could find a study abroad program that suited what I wanted to do very well. I felt very prepared going in, and I felt very comfortable reaching out to the study abroad advisors at Mizzou as well.

    Claire Fanning Louve
What are you learning from your study abroad experience outside the classroom?

I am learning how to take advantage of all my time in Europe. I have made it to 13 cities during the six weeks I have been here, and it has been a different experience in each one. I have gotten to do things I never imagined I would have the opportunity to do, such as going to a real ball in Vienna and skydiving in the Swiss Alps.

What are you enjoying about your time in France?

One of the things I have enjoyed most about my time in France is getting to experience the city of Paris as if I actually live here. I have been living in a neighborhood that is more filled with locals, and I have loved getting to see a different side of Paris. I have also loved my time being a tourist and going to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and so many other places around Paris.

What advice would you give other students considering studying abroad?

To other students considering studying abroad, I would recommend taking the leap. I did not know anyone from Mizzou doing the same program that I am doing, but it has been such a great opportunity to meet new people and see new things.

    Thanks for sharing!
