Ireland might not be the first country you think of when you think of “summer-y” destinations, but what it lacks in swimming pools and endless sunshine is made up for in its good vibes, good humor and its people’s legendary command of language, be that Gaelic or English. A summer study abroad experience in Ireland is sure to make a good story, and AIFS Abroad can help you craft it.

Looking for a summer with a bit more green? Here’s the “craic” on why summer is the perfect time to study abroad Ireland:

    1. It’s More Lush than Usual

We can’t promise you there won’t be rain during your summer stay in Ireland, but we can promise that this season is when the country’s breathtaking landscape comes alive. On a sunny day, it’s the best time to see Ireland’s stunning natural wonders. The iconic Cliffs of Moher become more harrowing, the Ring of Kerry becomes more scenic. Even the hillsides seem to become greener and truly shows why the country earned the nickname of “The Emerald Isle.” Plus, with more daylight hours and less night, you have more time to see the island’s beauty.

Emma, an AIFS Abroad alum, talks about her summer study abroad experience in Maynooth, Ireland

    2. It’s Time to Celebrate

In summer, locals maximize their time outdoors with celebrations in the sun. Festival season is a great opportunity to take in Irish culture in concentrated doses. Here are just a few of the festivals going on in summer that you won’t want to miss if you’re doing a summer study abroad program in Ireland:

    • Seas Sessions Surf and Music Festival (June) – Up in Donegal, the country’s best up and coming musicians and surfers perform for spectators. You don’t have to get in the water, but definitely join the sea of people dancing!
    • Bloomsday (June 16th) – Ireland takes pride in their many esteemed authors, and this is their biggest literary celebration, based on the day in James Joyce’s classic novel, “Ulysses.” It features readings, music, and tours to places referenced in the book.
    • Dublin Pride (June) – Dublin’s Pride celebration includes a colorful pride parade down O’Connell Street. There are also events that support and celebrate the history of Irish queer history, from a banner making class at the MART Gallery, to a Forest Bathing Walk in Phoenix Park with a percentage of proceeds going to Dublin Lesbian Line. (PS: If you’re curious about Dublin and its history, we offer study abroad and international internship programs there!)

    3. Dublin is More Seen

Exploring Ireland’s capital of city during Dublin as a study abroad student is great any time of year, but summer offers unique advantages. You’ll love strolling along Dublin’s city streets and taking in its Georgian architecture, from Dublin Castle to the Shelbourne Hotel, where the Irish Constitution was drafted in 1922. Be sure to also have a picnic in St. Stephen’s Green, a 72-acre park in the city’s center. Fun fact: the National Museum of Dublin has extended hours in summer, and even offers outdoor exhibitions and activities!

    4. Celtic Critters are Out

It’s not just the locals and tourists who come out to play in the summer, the Irish wildlife also take advantage of the warmer weather. Step out onto the coast to the west and you’re likely to spot puffins in the midst of their breeding season. The tiny seaside town of Dingle was once home to Ireland’s most popular dolphin, Fungie, who sadly hasn’t been spotted in a few years, but you can still take the Fungie boat tour out into the lagoon and see his dolphin and minke whale friends!

Valentina, an AIFS Abroad student, talks about her summer study abroad experience in Limerick, Ireland

    5. It’s The Best Time to Hang

The local pub is integral to Irish culture, and while locals in some countries may scoff at the summer tourist crowd, the Irish embrace visitors. Whether you’re in the pub to watch a hurling match or just share a pint with fellow students, don’t be surprised if a stranger sparks a conversation or invites you to come sit with them. And if they buy you a round, make sure you say sláinte (meaning health) when you cheers and offer to return the favor!

So, if you want a summer study abroad experience that you’ll be talking to strangers about forever, crack on with us to Ireland.

If you’re considering a summer study abroad program in Ireland, you’ve come to the right place. Here at AIFS Abroad, we offer incredible study abroad and international internship program options in Dublin, Galway, Maynooth and Limerick. With inclusions such as tuition, housing, insurance, excursions and activities, on-site staff, and emergency support, you’ll have a stress-free global education experience. Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the inviting Irish culture while earning college credits in between spring and fall semester. Are you ready?
