International students in the United States find themselves entangled in a complex web of socio-political issues that often dominate the landscape during election seasons. However, amidst these overarching narratives, it is evident that international students, particularly those of colour, are not mere bystanders but active participants. For many international students, the allure of the American dream serves as a beacon, drawing them to the US in pursuit of…

Studying abroad is often described as a transformative experience, a journey that broadens one’s academic horizons while also providing an opportunity for personal growth and cultural immersion. My own semester in Rome, Italy, living in the neighborhood of Trastevere and attending John Cabot University was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I stepped foot in Trastevere, I was captivated by its charm. Cobblestone streets lined with ivy-covered buildings, vibrant piazzas filled with lively chatter and the aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the air. Trastevere felt like a place straight out of a postcard. Yet, the path to…

Nicholas Kristof, the pro-sweatshop New York Times columnist,1 has written a critique of the Gaza solidarity movement, arguing that protesters are Hurting The Very People They Are Trying To Help.™ Kristof, who does not appear to have any background engaging in protest movements, offers suggestions for how protesters can “actually help Palestinians,” arguing that their current tactics are counterproductive. He says that while he sympathizes with the protesters, he cannot support their methods, and they are actually not helping the people of Gaza. (The people of Gaza themselves do not appear to agree, but Kristof plainly seems to think he…
Traveling abroad is undeniably remarkable. When immersing oneself in a culture different from one’s upbringing, the education obtained from these experiences goes far beyond what is taught in a classroom. By simply conversing with locals, learning their daily routine and even viewing their tangible surroundings, one is exposed to new experiences. This leaves me questioning why studying abroad for either a semester or merely a few weeks is not a mandatory part of Colgate University’s Core Curriculum. Of course, such a journey is an unattainable luxury for many, but what Colgate provides for its students are magnificent and easily accessible…
